It’s been four days into the Fall Semester at Navajo Technical University and I’ve decided that REZMAMA is going to host my “scholarly” and “unscholarly” thoughts… on reading assignments, classwork, and anything else that I can share on the following classes:
- Freshman Composition
- Composition and Research
- Introduction to Computers
- Introduction to Psychology
I’m calling this Postwork because it plays upon two meanings for the word post; I write posts and I write after doing certain work-like things (such as attending class, reading a section of a book, and so forth). I came up with this after reading Donald Clark’s thoughts on the problems with homework. I’m not addressing the issues other than that I support rewording things to step away from sociocultural baggage and to assert a different view.
“First, ‘Homework’ is a hideous word and why education still uses such a negative and obviously industrial word ‘work’, in relation to learning, escapes me. . . . I’d call it ‘home learning’ or ‘self-learning’ but I’d welcome other suggestions.”
